After a long day at school, kids come home with one thing on their minds: snacks. Whether juggling homework help, extracurricular activities, or just trying to catch a moment of peace, having a stash of easy afterschool snacks is a game-changer, the best snacks are quick to prepare, packed with nutrients, and something your kids will actually eat.
Here’s a list of ten no-fuss ideas to keep your little snackers happy — and your sanity intact.
1. Apples in a bag
Turn a classic apple into a fun treat. Slice apples thinly and throw them in a snack baggie. Put a dollop of peanut butter in the bag, and you're good to go! You can sprinkle granola or chocolate chip mini morsels if you want. It’s crunchy, sweet, and packed with fiber and protein.
2. Veggie sticks with ranch dip or hummus
Keep pre-cut carrots, celery, and bell peppers in the fridge for an easy grab-and-go option. Pair them with store-bought or homemade hummus for a snack that’s full of vitamins and a
satisfying crunch.
Again, throw them in a bag and good to go! I also like to add naan or pita in case they don't want veggies. But with constant exposure, my kids have started to like it.
3. Cheese and whole-grain crackers
A classic combo that’s always a hit! Slice up some cheese and serve it with whole-grain crackers. Add some apple slices or grapes on the side for a complete mini-meal.
4. Diced chicken with cheese
Whether it’s leftover chicken from last night, chicken you quickly cooked in the Instant Pot, or pre-diced, store-bought chicken, just toss it into a baggie, add some cheese, and voilà — a complete, no-fuss meal!
5. Mini sandwich skewers
Thread pieces of turkey, cheese, cherry tomatoes, and whole-grain bread onto toothpicks for a fun and portable snack. These mini skewers are perfect for kids who love finger foods!
You could just throw a sandwich together, but this is one of the kids favorite afterschool snacks because it breaks up from the mundane.
6. DIY trail mix
If you're comfortable with your kids eating nuts (and they like it), then you can easily either buy trail mix or have the kids make it themselves. Sometimes I let them do this, but my kids don't eat as much nuts as I'd like.
7. Smoothie popsicles
Got leftover smoothie from breakfast? Pour it into popsicle molds and freeze for a refreshing afterschool snack. Blend fruits like bananas, strawberries, and spinach with yogurt or milk for a nutrient-packed treat that feels like dessert.
Warning: This one can get messy in the car, but they love it. And I'll often throw spinach or greens to make it more nutrient-packed.
8. Avocado and crackers
I dice up avocados, cheese, and sometimes tomatoes and throw some crackers (say it with me!) in a baggie, and they have avocado toast.
I'm slowly introducing my kids to hemp seed and balsamic vinegar, and they like it — sometimes.
9. Frozen banana bites
Slice bananas into bite-sized pieces, dip them in melted chocolate and freeze. These bite-sized treats are perfect for kids with a sweet tooth — and they’re surprisingly easy to make ahead.
10. Energy bites
Mix oats, peanut butter, honey, and a handful of mini chocolate chips in a bowl. Roll into small balls and refrigerate for a protein-packed, no-bake snack that kids will devour. They’re the ultimate grab-and-go afterschool snack!
